Floanch

To floanch is to live a trouble free life and not letting unpredictable and uncontrollable events rattle your wits. It’s a metaphor of course. Keeping adrift on the surface of a turbulent sea while in the meantime having a stable anchor to your own personality. Anchoring while floating.

Lets be honest: it is getting exceedingly difficult these days to accomplish this. The number of people with stress and burn-out problems keeps rising. Increasingly so with young people, where you would expect more mental agility and more energy in their batteries. How can this be?

Psychologists and sociologists point to a large number of factors: a rapidly changing world, an increasingly uncertain future, a rising pressure on the individual and so on. The major part of these factors is external (which puts them in a separate category, on which more further on in this site) but the most important factors are the internal ones. That what goes on in our minds affects our feelings of tension and stress more than anything the world around us can throw at us. So that will be the centre point of our focus: to get the inside out. That’s quite the opposite of turning our focus inside, and with good reason.

When stress has overpowerd us it’s fashionable nowadays to turn to Eastern philosophies or religions. Mindfulness is a perfect example of this. Though we won’t argue that Mindfulness doesn’t work as a self-help strategie, it is the word “self” that is the root of our concern. It is a way of looking inward, of getting to be at peace with yourself. Which is a good step in itself, but it is an individualistic step. In an increasingly individualistic world, edging us towards a solitary, lonely life. Most of the answers you are looking for do not lie within yourself. Getting to know what things could really fulfil your life, what could really get your juices flowing, comes from sharing with others: getting your thoughts and feelings in the open; seeing how others react to those; learning the thoughts and feelings of others; getting new thoughts and ideas from that, ideas you would never have come to just by looking inside.

That is what we can do to keep our thoughts on track and not get agitated without proper cause. That’s what Floanchoring is all about. That’s what this site aims to get across.
